The Sailor's preferred choice for adjusting dinghy trapeze lines. Also used for vangs & kicking straps; outhauls and small dinghy forestays. The Clamcleat® CL253 offers a light weight and compact solution for rope adjustment, with a quick, positive lock, that is easy to release.
Each Clamcleat® CL253 is supplied with a black "link" (PTLINK). This makes releasing the rope a lot easier. For windsurfing, the CL253 can be used as part of a adjustable downhaul system.
The cleat has an in-built pulley. Manufactured from aluminium for light weight and durable performance, two finishes are available:
1. CL253 has a silver stove enamel finish for a cost effective, high quality coating
2. CL253AN has a hard anodised finish to give a hard wearing surface.
Helpful hints:
- Use 16 plait rope for best results.
- Always use the supplied PTLINK for easier rope release. See rigging sketches on right.
- Waxing the rope can protect rigs from sand damage and revitalise a worn rig.
- Use heat shrink covers or electrical tape to prevent potential snagging points.
The CL253 can be also used for- Canvas structures and Theatre lighting
Our CL834 makes a great handle for the CL253 for dinghy Trapeze adjustment.
When the CL253 is rigged 1:1, the PT230SSE is ideal to use as a rope guide.
Some people like to use the CL264 for their trapeze because it is easy to hold the whole cleat in your hand.
A slightly smaller cleat that is also used for Trapeze is the CL230.

Q: What Clamcleat® cleat can be used for a trapeze cleat?
Ans: The CL253 and CL236 cleats can be used as trapeze cleats.
Q: What is a roller cleat?
Ans: A roller cleat has an internal sheave within the cleat which allows the rope to enter the cleat from more obtuse angles from above or below the cleat.
Q: What size of rope can you use on the CL253?
Ans: The CL253 will accept ropes from 4-8mm.
Q: What accessories can be used with the CL253?
Ans: The CL834 trapeze cleat handle and the PT230SSE stainless steel eye can be used with the CL253 trapeze cleat.
Q: What power ration can be used with the Clamcleat® CL253 cleat?
Ans: The CL253 cleat can be used with a 1:1 or 2:1 power ratio.
Q: Why does Clamcleat® not publish safe working loads (SWL) or break loads for its cleats?
Ans: The quality, type and style of the rope or cord plays a major role in the performance of the cleat. Normally the better the quality of the rope the greater holding power, also some cleats are designed to slip once they exceed the desired holding load as a safety feature including securing fabrics such as sunshades or covers.
Q: Do you get a better performance with an Aluminum cleat?
Ans: Aluminum cleats do not improve the performance of the cleat, but they can achieve higher holding loads and they also might improve the lifespan of the cleat especially if the rope will be in contact with the teeth whilst the rope is being pulled through during adjustment.
Q: What different coating are there for the Aluminum cleats?
Ans: The standard coating for the cleat is a Stoving Aluminum silver enamel coating. For extra protection from corrosion and a high-tech appearance the cleats are also available in a dark grey Hard anodized finish. The part no in suffixed with “AN” to identify the hard anodized finish.
Q: How long should an Aluminum cleat last?
Ans: This really depends on the usage, the quality and age of the rope used etc. so is very difficult to gauge. The ultraviolet rays will discolor the cleats over time and in very sunny climates may affect the life of the cleat. In extreme climates the life expectancy should be 10 -15 years depending on usage and in more moderate climate 20 + years.
Q: What type of rope or cord will give the best performance on my cleats?
Ans: In our experience a braided good quality rope gives you the best holding performance.
Q: Is there any maintenance required to a cleat to keep it performing well?
Ans: We would recommend flushing the with fresh water as often are you can.
